List of Volunteers

Introduction

In Imágenes y Palabras, we want to promote the idea of collective work and volunteering. For this reason and because of lack of other means, our activities are realized with the help of volunteers. Since 2002 we work with international volunteers. In the beginning through short-term work camps in collaboration with SCI, now we work mainly with individual long- and short-term volunteers, through the EVS programme and with WWOOF.

As our association is based in a very small mountain village with only seven permanent inhabitants, 10 km away from the first village with shops, the volunteering experience is very special and unforgetable.

In this chapter you can find information about the type of work volunteers do, read about experiences of ex volunteers and what to do if you are interested to be a volunteer at Imágenes y Palabras.

Volunteers at work

The tasks of each volunteer will be adapted to his/her personal qualities, knowledge, abilities,... We try to balance construction and restoration tasks with gardening and those related to the organisation of cultural activities.

We are open to initiatives from the volunteer, both referring to organisation of cultural activities and artistic projects, as to construction tasks, though always in collaboration with the members of Imágenes y Palabras.

El Hacedor (construction and renovations)

The project “El Hacedor” consists of the renovation of various buildings of popular construction to turn them into a workshop of artistic production, with a space for expositions and “multi-use” i.e. showing films, poetry, dance, theatre, debates, etc. The renovation of these buildings are at the moment the main duty of volunteers.

Untill november 2007 we´ll be busy with basic construction work (building walls, first floor, doors, windows, roof etc). In 2008 the main work will consist of the installation and termination of the exhibitionhall and workshops, preparation of electric and water installations etc. More difficult tasks are always done in collaboration with a professional.

fila1

Cultural activities

Besides the construction of ¨El Hacedor¨, Imágenes y Palabras organises cultural activities in the area. Volunteers help in the organisation of these projects as well: distribution of leaflets and posters in villages, organisation of press conferences, prize giving, installation of exhibitions, meeting with artists, etc. Volunteers will learn how to organise cultural activities and will know in detail about all the elements included.

We invite volunteers to create their own (little) project, depending on their individual qualities, interests and capicities. This activity can for example include a film project, an exposition of arts, a poetry project, a cultural competition for children, etc.

fila2

Gardening

As we like to eat fresh vegetables we have a big vegetable garden. Thus, part of the work is maintaining the garden, to plant and to harvest tomatoes, beans, peas, onions, carrots, pumpkins, peppers, lettuces, etc.

fila3

House Duties

We expect the volunteers to collaborate in cleaning and cooking.

General

Working with Imagenes y Palabras and bearing in mind the activities of the organisation, the volunteers will gain in depth knowledge the whole region: the villages, its people, habits, culture,... and will quickly be integrated in it. Furthermore, they will live together and collaborate with other international volunteers.

No sabía qué podía esperar.

PIEDRA A PIEDRA
Mi cara contra un muro. Cuántas horas.
Cuántos milímetros separando cuántas piedras,
cuántas piedras uniendo cuántos muros.
Tu cara contra el muro.
En cada milímetro de piedra tus ojos
rastreando lo que tus manos pulen.
Cuántas manos rastreando cuántos huecos,
cuántos huecos uniendo cuántas piedras.
Cuántos muros uniendo cuántas manos.
Pensando mis manos pulen.
Pensando lo que tus manos pulen,
lo que tus huecos piensan.
Cuántas horas.
Cuántos muros.

---DIARY--- JARI'S HOLIDAY DIARY ---DIARY---

jariTravel day x
sat 21.6.2003 21:21
Local coffee bar, Hendaye, France
The workcamp is over and the man is heading for new adventures. Spain proved to be a rather nice place. I could not avoid a certain culture shock, but, hey, Hispanic is Hispanic.
The best in the camp were the people. It sure would be nice to meet them someday, somewhere, but unfortunately it is a long journey to the States or South-Korea. Still Spain, France, Ireland or Belgium seem to be a bit more realistic, not mentioning Sweden. Hmm, Malmö, here I come … =).
A couple of days ago, I was surprised to feel a bit homesick. Sofie said something likewise. Oh well, Sofie, Min and Hanna made their way to Madrid to party for the weekend. It was tough, while I went along, but I had promised to hurry to Kiel (Germany) to meet an old friend so... *blush*... emotions were at the top at the time of parting. Hope they have a nice time, all the camp-goers.
At least the temperature is enough, the weather report from an internet cafe promised 37 degrees Celsius but this is more. A phone booth was like a humid sauna. Just the way I like it. =).
