Cultural Association
IMÁGENES Y PALABRAS
The primary aim of the cultural association Imágenes y Palabras (literal translation:
Images & Words) is to diversify the cultural environment of the rural areas
where it is based. The cultural centre and collective workshop “El Hacedor”,
at La Aldea del Portillo de Busto, is the heart and point of departure for the
realisation of its activities.
Examples of the activities we organise are: multidisciplinary and international
exhibitions of modern art, permanent sculpture exhibition in the open air, scarecrow
contests, artistical activities in the villages around, especially for children,
organization of performances, concerts, poetryreading and a large etcetera.
In order to maintain “El Hacedor” we work with long term volunteers, in cooperation
with WWOOF, SCI
(Service Civil International) and EVS
(European Voluntary Services). For more information about volunteering with
Imágenes y Palabras, click here.
Who we are
To comply with its primary aim to diversify cultural life in the countryside,
¨Imágenes y Palabras¨ is constantly working on cultural and artistic activities
in La Aldea del Portillo de Busto and in the surrounding villages and towns
belonging to the Province of Burgos.
Over the past 10 years, the activities that have taken place have varied greatly
both in shape and form. However, they are always brought together in their unique
invitation to ´create´, both in terms of ideas as well as artworks. In this
way, the activities have become a true stimulus for artists and call for an
active participation from the public. They are indeed very diverse, ranging
from contemporary art exhibitions, film viewings, prize givings, seminars, book
readings – in other words, a range of activities that in one way or another
relate to Culture and Society.
How we started
The idea of creating an association, a cultural centre, a collective workhop,
a scarecrowscontest, expositions about trains, filmprojections in small villages,…
in short: Imágenes y Palabras, never existed. Imágenes y Palabras has grown
alone, slowly, but emerging, in its own pace, from two foreigners who, one day
in their life, decided suddenly to replace the big crowded city for the silence
of the mountains.
One of these two persons happened to be an artist, the other one a fanatic organizer
and together they managed to surround themselves with more and more artists,
culturelovers, friends, volunteers, and so forth.
On the base of manual labour, lots of hours and loads of patience, somehow they
manage to keep the thing running and achieve progress. Not one boat will reach
the other side of the coast on its own; so won’t development in these abandoned
rural areas.
People, hands, energy and power are the basic ingredients for Imágenes y Palabras
to reach their goal: to have “El Hacedor” running, to be able to invite artists
from all over the world to come to work in this small village, to create, to
think, to debate, to quarrel and to laugh. And to keep on moving this area,
where there is still so much to do in order to guarantee future.
This website will help to get to know something about Imágenes y Palabras, but
if you really want to know what this is all about, a visit to La Aldea del Portillo
de Busto is required.
EL HACEDOR: COLLECTIVE WORKSHOP AND CULTURAL CENTRE
The Collective Workshop and Cultural Centre "El Hacedor" based in
the village of La Aldea del Portillo del Busto form the headquarters for "Imágenes
y Palabras", a creative space and a meeting place. Together with the extensive
workshop for artistic production, there is an art gallery (150m2), a small library
and a house where members of "Imágenes y Palabras", artists, volunteers
and guests can stay. In the workshop, artists of different backgrounds can produce
artworks and exchange ideas. The art gallery is open to all types of artistic
shows such as film viewings, plays, poetry recitals, gigs, dance performances,
seminars, book readings, to name a few – any activity that conforms with the
